Why your detox fails and what to do about it

Maybe doing a detox is on your mind as the holidays approach and the dreaded “diet” word looms as a prescription for kicking off the new year.

Unfortunately, there is a considerable amount of misinformation when it comes to doing a detox—with many popular websites dishing irresponsible advice on rapid cleanses.

Doing an extreme cleanse without the guidance of a professional is not a weight loss quick-fix and may trigger a slew of problems. As such, I felt compelled to dig deeper into this confusing topic.

I asked holistic mind, body, & spirit practitioner Ajnira Laurie Bloom to share her insights gleaned from over 20 years in practice. She explains how to conduct a detox in a safe and healthy way and why a typical detox is not only doomed to fail, it could be detrimental to your health.

Here’s what she had to say.

detox fail

You can not do a successful detox in a few days.

It’s easy to sign up for a juice-cleanse, maybe do a little walking, meditation, and journaling and think you are cleansing, but it’s much more involved than that. Proper detoxification actually takes years. It takes dedication. It takes commitment and most of all it takes knowledge.

A careless detox can lead to illness.

Detoxification is a complicated and very rigorous but delicate process involving the orchestration of different body systems. No two people share the same biochemistry.  Depending upon your body’s level of health and vitality, you may or may not be able to neutralize and safely expel toxins that are produced as a result of biochemical transformation of fat-soluble into water-soluble free-radical oxygen species. The long-term consequences of careless detoxing is increased cancer-risk. Period.  We are talking about healing and more than a short term diet change is involved.

A reliable detox requires the care of a professional and proper supplements.

There are lifestyle changes and healing practices that are needed as well. That is why people go to healing centers like the Hippocrates Institute, the Ann Wigmore Institute, and the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center to name a few.  Depending on the strength of your individual detoxification pathways, you will need specialized supplements and in some cases specific organ support to help make your leap into clean a safe and smooth journey.

Symptoms from a detox could be unsafe.

“Detoxification symptoms” are not safe. The only way it’s safe is if you understand the biochemistry involved or if you’re under the direct supervision of someone who does. Those programs can be good if they’re tweaked by a pro or you, if you know the ropes.

A true detox is not only about weight loss.

Every toxin you’ve ever consumed has to be expelled from the tissues you’re storing them in, from pesticides and animal drug residues in conventional foods, to chemicals, additives, and preservatives in processed foods to personal care products, as well as medications and countless home and environmental pollutants. We live in a society that exposes us to continual toxin consumption. These reasons are why it is critical that we do take the challenge of undergoing regular and deep detoxing as well as making every effort to live a clean and green lifestyle.

The biggest misconception in dieting.

In my holistic wellness practice the biggest misconception I find is that most people believe they eat a ‘good’ or ‘healthy’ diet. The truth is they eat the way they’ve been taught by family, culture, and media. The underlying belief is that it’s good because that’s the way it has always been done for generations before them on all fronts.

But these generations have lived with aches and pains and chronic or unhealthy conditions that either were not spoken about or were considered part of a normal aging process. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This is like a nutritional blind-spot because if you’re eating the same foods that you grew up with and that everyone in your family or cultural groups eat, you’re still accumulating those toxins on a daily basis and not raising the standard for providing nutrients to your cells.

My advice is to use current advances in nutrition science and superfoods as the basis to building vitality through awareness and higher consciousness.

  1. I really love that you took the time to put this together in such a clear and concise way. The thought that people feel they eat well because that’s how everyone else ate is so true and now I have a better way to explain that to others. The way my grandmother are growing up was probably fine at the time but since then food has changed and the bread she ate as a child isn’t the bread available to us now. The world has become so much more toxic and it truly takes a lifestyle overhaul to heal our bodies from it, and limit the bad things we must deal with. I love this, it’s a topic I could discuss all day.

    1. How true is that! The bread and wheat we consume today is not the same. Thanks for pointing that out too, Rebeckah. So happy you enjoyed the post. Ajnira uses highly attuned intuition and wisdom in her work with people. Xo

      1. Even if the food is basically the same, could it be that family tradition diets also pass down and/or enable the continuation of inherited health problems?
